Who runs the world? Women@Essence

There’s never been a more exciting time to be a woman, and our Women@Essence group is determined to take advantage of this moment.
We held an open forum in our New York office to talk about what matters most to our female employees. Participants were at different stages in their careers and personal lives; some are the only woman in the room while others are fighting just to get through the door. Despite our differences, we learned we share a passion for such issues as equal pay, work/life balance, cultural diversity, and the role men can play in gender equality. It’s no longer “men are from Mars, women are from Venus”; we’re going to move to Mars and run the colony our way.
A distinct through line persisted in our conversations: the need for empathy. We can’t address any of these pressing issues without accounting for each other’s perspectives. While it’s a lofty goal, it’s one we’re dedicated to achieving.
Marketers know the future is digital, but Women@Essence is marshaling our forces to ensure it’s also female. We’ll have events throughout our offices in March for International Women’s Day on the 8th and Women’s History Month, as well as for the rest of the year, as we begin to address the issues we discussed in real and tangible ways. The theme for IWD this year is #BeBoldForChange and that’s what we intend to be.
