...a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Yes that’s right, the internet has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize and Essence has enjoyed being a part of the global campaign to gather support for its nomination. Since 1901 120 Peace Prizes have been awarded, 97 to individuals and 23 to various humanitarian organisations. However this is the first time the Internet has been recognised for its work in promoting freedom of speech, human rights and democracy.
We have helped to drive its nomination by designing and implementing a dedicated YouTube channel called Internet for Peace. The channel is supported by a global banner ad campaign which has been translated into 13 languages including Italian, German, Korean, Portuguese and Japanese. We hope that this will encourage users all over the world to get involved in supporting the Internet’s bid for this year’s prize.
At its heart, the channel is a forum allowing users to give their reasons why the Internet should win. So if you have a view, and a video camera, you can make a 5 minute video and post it to the YouTube channel. The best video will be selected in September and the winning ‘director’ invited to New York for a special screening on World Peace Day, so for you budding film makers out there get your cameras ready.
